Teaching philosophy
I believe that teachers impact students as much outside of the classroom as they do inside. When I look back at my experiences as a student, it is the teachers’ who took the time to look closer and see me as an individual who impacted me the most. I found a love for teaching and gathered experience as a STEM summer counselor at a camp while in secondary school. Watching students gain an understanding and develop a hunger for more knowledge was one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had.
I plan to build a student centered classroom that allows students to feel safe and judgement free. This is important as students are more likely to be open and take chances without the fear of being wrong. My goal is to build an environment which is accessible to all regardless of learning style or disability. My students will believe in their own abilities through empowerment and encouragement not only from me but their peers.
Students will be assessed in multiple ways in order to provide equal opportunity for success and not to discourage them. They will be expected to work collaboratively to assist each other with their weaknesses to be more well rounded students. Their interests will be catered to as well as their likes and dislikes as this will give them the assurance that they are important as individuals.
In an effort to develop a well rounded student who is ready for the world around them, the use of technology needs to be incorporated inside and outside of the classroom. I will integrate technology into every lesson whether it be video’s interactive sites, presentations etc. We have entered an era which demands some level technological skills. Mastery of it is necessary for survival and students must be exposed in order to be successful in the 21st century. Students will have access to lessons taught during the semester outside of the classroom as well as extra assessments and resources to assist in anything they may want more assistance with. This blended lesson allows for students to be in control and the focus of their education.
Not only will my students be assessed but I will engage in discussions with my students to assess myself. Understanding what they did and did not like, what they think worked or helped them and what they understood from the class. I want my students to connect what they learn inside the classroom with the world around them and that learning is an active everyday activity that they will continue through life. I will continue to educate myself on advances in education, technology and science in an effort to maintain a continuously evolving and modern learning environment. I will also learn from my students and will tell them when I don’t know or I am unsure. I would like to be a positive influence on students' lives who inspires them to aspire to be anything. Helping them find confidence in themselves and their abilities regardless of what adversities they may face not just inside the classroom but throughout life.`
